The rotating sets were truly impressive, causing many distractions from the performance itself as I marveled at their transformation and pondered: "How did they achieve that?" The pyrotechnics were exceptional, and the chandelier's descent startled numerous audience members in the center orchestra seating.
If you have never witnessed the original stage rendition of Phantom showcased years back at the Murat, this fresh interpretation will surely capture your heart: the backdrops had an almost three-dimensional quality and smoothly slid in and out, the rotating sets were fantastic, and the chandelier's fall induced fear in many rows of patrons.
On the other hand, if you have experienced the previous version at the Murat, you may find some aspects of this "new" rendition slightly disappointing. Gone is the iconic chandelier's ascent and descent, replaced by a darker and more sinister atmosphere with increased physical conflict and dramatic effects like pillars of flame, flash-bangs, gunshots, and lots of smoke and mirrors. The humor that once defined the Hannibal rehearsal has mostly vanished, leaving a more serious tone.
The production maximized the limited stage space at the Murat, but certain scenes felt cramped, particularly the brief boat ride and the claustrophobic "Masquerade." The performers delivered stellar performances, showcasing their vocal prowess and engaging the audience with playful nuances. The Ballet Chorus impressed with their graceful movements, and the Better Than Ezra character's music mishap was both pitiful and captivating.
In conclusion, this new version of Phantom is a bold departure from the original, embracing a darker tone and heightened theatricality. Embrace the change, open your mind, and appreciate the unique elements this production offers. I am already looking forward to my next visit to the theater.
